Skittles for Essie - A Tribute

Hey everybody!

Many of you may have read this past week that Essie Rae of IHeartPrettyPolish has decided to take an indefinite break from blogging.  This was a difficult decision for her, but she ultimately feels like this is the best thing for her life right now.  Essie has become a dear friend to me over the past few months.  She was the one who encouraged me to start my blog.  Her blog was also the very first polish blog I ever followed.  I think I was her 27th follower! :)  So about 1200 followers later, Essie still always made the time to encourage me in my blogging and just be a good friend in general, even from 1497 miles away.

The lovely Christine of Polished Marvels had the wonderful idea for a few of us to honor Essie in the form of a tribute skittlette.  Now you all know I don't do nail art, and even the idea of a skittlette made me panic (I never let on to Christine...LOL), but I just put together some memories of Essie's manis from over the past year and a half, and it all came together. :)

Essie's Skittlette: Starring Zoya Dannii, OPI OY-Another Polish Joke, Maya Cosmetics Imagine

Way back before I was blogging and looked upon Essie as quite the nail polish rock star (I still do, by the way), she did a Friday Favorites post featuring Zoya Dannii.  Dannii was my very favorite polish for a long time.  I thought to myself, "Well, it's official.  This girl has great taste." :D  I even got up enough courage to COMMENT on the post!

Zoya Dannii is a medium purple shimmer.  It's a completely beautiful polish with the usual fantastic Zoya application.  I painted my thumb and index finger with Dannii and my pinky bookend with another shimmer, this year's favorite gold, the fabulous OPI OY-Another Polish Joke.

For my middle and ring fingers, I used Imagine by indie company Maya Cosmetics.  Essie featured a Maya Cosmetics polish about one week before I started my blog, and I was not very familiar with indie companies then.  But per usual Essie, she made the polish look so good that I looked up Maya myself. :)  Imagine is a sheer white base with purple and yellow gold satin glitter and some tiny iridescent glitter.  Because Imagine is so sheer, I layered it over Zoya Kendal, and oddly enough, it still looked white!

The finished look shows how well the matte satin glitter of Imagine compliments the shimmer of Dannii and OY.

And could I ever "imagine" blogging without having known my dear friend Essie?  No.

  1. What a lovely idea! I didn't know her until recently, through a fb group. It's such a shame when something you love turned into a chore and you just can't enjoy it anymore :( Hope that will never happen to me :)

I also saw her Dannii manis & ALMOST got it in my first (well, only) Zoya order, but I had too many in my cart for my own good. ;)

  3. This is lovely! All of these colors work together beautifully! I think Essie also led me to Maya Cosmetics - when she said that Graceless Lady was the perfect polish to pair with jeans and a white shirt she was right on! <3

    1. LOL...WHEW!! I am beyond happy that you give my skittlette your stamp of approval. It was so funny...when you emailed us about your idea, I knew I HAD to participate! I mean, after all, it's ESSIE! But I panicked about this for hours and hours. When I saw the finished product, I was pretty happy! And I have to say that I just came back from Ulta, and the checkout girl loved my nails! <3

  6. What a perfectly coordinated set, Mel :) Great job! We all had the same thought, too, and one it's almost impossible to avoid, as it were, including a polish on our stash that, in some capacity, is there because of Es, lol :) And believe me when I say that I've not seen Oy look so nice in its own, not as a topper. Just lovely, girlie.

    1. Thank you so much! <3 And how hasn't Essie influenced us, right? One reason I was so drawn to her blog in the first place was because she just always reviewed the best stuff. :) And thanks for the Oy compliment...that means a LOT coming from Oy's biggest fan! :D

  7. Melissa, you did it!!!!! What an awesome mani. And you have reminded me to grab Dannii again. Part of my issue with blogging is that I can't wear the polishes that I love because I already showed them on my blog:( Now I can wear whatever the heck I want!!! LOL. Thank you so much for putting the thought and effort into this post. You have become such a great friend. I enjoy talking to you through email and continuing to read your humorous posts. You know I still think you need to write a book. Thank you again for the kind words, they mean so much to me. And I had to show my husband that last picture. So special <3 Talk to you soon!

    1. YAY!! I'm so glad you like it! See...your pep talks still work. :D Yes girl...go grab Dannii and relive those good times! My bottle has nearly turned to glue, but I was gonna make it work ONE LAST TIME for your tribute! :) Like I've told you before, I don't want to sound like a crazy stalker, but I sincerely thank you so much for all you've done for me. I am SO glad I met and have had the privilege of getting to know you. I hope we will become even better friends, whether or not you you continue your career as the world's premier blogging rock star. ;)
