Nail of the Day: Essie It's Genius

Hey everybody!  I hope everything is going well in your world. :)  I have been plagued with problematic polishes lately, but I finally got some decent photos today.  Today I'm showing It's Genius by Essie, a polish that proves you can be pretty AND smart!

It's Genius is from the 2008 winter collection.  It's described by Essie as a "violet quartz shimmer polish with beige undertones", but I wouldn't call this color violet.  It's a pinky-purple much along the lines of my beloved (yet dearly departed) My Big Break by OPI.

Please forgive the uneven application around the cuticles...It's Genius is runnier than a 3-minute egg pronounced "well done" at 20 seconds.  It made application as unpalatable as aforementioned egg.  I found that one thin coat followed by one thick coat seemed to be the best way to control this.

But enough of the bad stuff about It's Genius...just look at that lovely color!  The shimmer is quite strong too, which gives it an elegant, velvety appearance.

My verdict:  I love the color of It's Genius and strongly dislike the formula.  BUT, if you're not going to be taking macro photos of your nails whilst wearing it, I recommend it. :)  I found my It's Genius from the Ulta clearance shelf, but I think it's still a part of the core line.

So...I will leave you all with a burning question:  Had you rather be pretty or smart? :D

Thanks for stopping by, and have a lovely day!

  1. LOL. I like my eggs scrambled:) Yep, typical Essie formula. It does look pretty on you. Sometimes I will get past the formula if the end result is unique and gorgeous. While this is gorgeous, I'm not sure how unique it is. I think there is a Zoya that recently came out that looks a lot like this. I don't remember the name though. Pretty or Smart??? Hmmmm - how about pretty and then I will study and learn to be smart. Does that work? How about you?

    1. Smart, hands down. :) UGH this formula...I look at the pics and I can see bald spots all over the place! :P But like I said, if you are wearing it for the pure enjoyment of wearing it (what would that be like??), then it's fine.

  2. Haha that sounds pretty runny. It's a gorgeous shade though, so rich and vibrant! :) Oh dear, what a hard question "pretty or smart". I guess it depends on how pretty or how smart, or conversely how not pretty and not smart one would be. I dunno... I hope to be both. :)

    1. Thanks, it is really vibrant, isn't it? And I always say, you can fix yourself up to the point of attractiveness, but you can't fix stupid. :P

  3. The shimmer!!!! Almost makes me forget about the horrendous formula... Why do the pretty polishes treat us the worst? I really like the color though! It goes great with your skin tone. :) Can't we be pretty AND smart? Either way, as long as I have my polish I'm happy! ;)

    1. I know. The shimmer. It sucks me in every time. Well, we can be pretty and smart. I just asked if you had to choose one, which would it be!!

  4. I get SO frustrated with some of the Essie formula's too! Do you think your love for the color is enough to win out over the runny snot formula? I myself, also take my eggs scrambled, exactly for that reason!

    1. I don't know...I had rather have runny than really thick, but this stuff is SO runny it gives runny a bad name, you know? :)

  5. Hi Melissa, oh gosh this is so beautiful on you!!! Your nails already gleamed from that small picture in the overwiew!!!! And major eye-rolling about the formula - I am exaspirated with thise big companies throwing either 3 min eggs (I loved THAT one) or glue at us. Why for the polish sake can't they get a decent and consistent formula??? Well asking is an exercise in futility but this is why I hardly buy any Essies anymore - still the Genius looks "geniale" on you <3

    1. Heh heh...why thank you. Isn't it a shame when such a pretty color behaves so unladylike? The bad formula is why I don't wear it often...I decided to pull it out and was surprised at just how pretty it is.

  8. Pretty color!

If I had to choose, I'd pick pretty. Being smart and having a Harvard Law degree hasn't gotten me very much. I think I need to start counting on my looks instead. :)

    1. Well...I'm not pretty, but I'm smart. That hasn't gotten me a whole lot either, but I'd sure hate to be dumb. Or maybe I wouldn't? Ignorance is bliss, right? :)
