Sally Hansen Sugar Coat Comparison: Bubble Plum and Red Velvet

Hey everybody! :)  I hope you've been doing well.  I've had company for the past week, so I took a little blogging break.  But guess what?  I bought a few *cough* polishes over the last few days, so I thought today I'd feature my new Sally Hansen Sugar Coat purchases.  It's a textured kinda day here at Lacquer Reverie! :D

First up is Bubble Plum, a creme.  I found this one at Wal-Mart.

I know what you're thinking.  "Oh look.  Pink.  Didn't she say she didn't wear pink?"  Hey, I am coming to terms with suddenly loving pink.  But this is the best kind of pink:  the kind with a lot of lavender! :)

There's something about the creme Sugar Coat polishes that looks like a plastic coating.  They're not rubbery.  They're gritty.  I think it may be the shine factor that makes them look a bit on the strange side.  I'll be honest...the green one, Sour Apple, looks like the Easter Bunny had a run-in with a bowl of cottage cheese.  Kinda creepy.

Bubble Plum may be gritty, but wow, is it ever a nice color!  The second Sugar Coat I purchased was one I found at Target...the display had colors I hadn't seen before anywhere else.  I stood there at the display turning the bottle of Red Velvet around under the lights to make sure I was really seeing this...

SHIMMER!  Shimmer in a textured polish the EXACT color of red velvet cake!  I snatched that baby up before you could say "cream cheese frosting!"  It was on sale anyway.  :D

You all remember I change my polish almost every single day?  Well, I wore Red Velvet for FIVE days straight.  The color is that gorgeous.  I found myself staring at my nails in a most embarrassing fashion.

She wore Red Velvet...then she ate a cupcake.

The bottom line of this comparison:  shimmer always wins!

I had some trouble with the Sugar Coat formulas, but I don't think it was their fault.  They would not completely dry.  I used 2 coats of polish and finally had to use a coat of CND Air Dry just so the stuff would dry.  I then put another thin layer of polish over that to give it the texture again.  I honestly think the problem is our 127% humidity.

Do you own any Sugar Coat polishes?  What is your opinion of them?  So many textures out there...and they are all different.  Rather fascinating...

Thanks for stopping by, and have a lovely day! :)

  1. Red Velvet is so pretty! I've been debating on getting the Sugar Coats, but I think I'll have to at least get Red Velvet. OH, and I NEED Sour Apple JUST so I can always think of you, the Easter Bunny, and cottage cheese! Haha, thanks for the laugh! :D

    1. Hahaha...it's seriously the first thing I thought of when I saw swatches of it online. But yes, you NEED Red Velvet! :)

  2. Okay, totally NOT a fan of textured cremes for the same reason you stated... They're novel and all that, but a little sheer, sparkle, and shimmer just add such a level of beauty and wearability to these things. RED VELVET IS GORGEOUS!!! And tastie, always. That's a last meal item, right there, red velvet cake. But it'll have to be made by me, lol. Or Essie. I bet she makes a mean red velvet. You probably do, too, for that matter :)

    1. Trust me, you'd rather have Essie's red velvet cake. :) I despise cooking so I do as little as possible. But now...the polish! :D You're right about sparkle and shimmer adding so much to a polish.

  5. Hi Melissa, so lovely to have you back posting - I wondered all week (while you were writing all those great comments over at mine) what would grace your nails ;-)!!! Well, there is the solution - Red Velvet is gorgeous!!! I - ehem - LOVE textured polishes but just the Opi's and the Isodoras - why? Because they got sparkle and shimmer. If they "just" shine - and they all do that up to a certain level - they remind me of rubberized wallpaint :-S!!! My brain still tries to envision the Easter Bunny - LOL, too funny :-D!!! Great post and awesome introduction to the Sally Hansens - they are not available in Switzerland! Cuddles to your pups and have a lovely day xxx

    1. I DID so enjoy Red Velvet during the week. It's prettier than I thought it would be...that's always a nice surprise!! Although I don't care for the creme textured polishes, I do like the suede finish ones. I have a lot of Layla Softtouch Effects that I want to post soon...there are matte finishes, rubbery finishes, and suede finishes, and they're all very interesting. I'm glad you liked the Sally Hansen comparison!! :)

  6. I really like these! Sally Hansen is hard to find over here, but I saw these in a shop the other day, and decided to check out reviews for it - I have to try it now, especially as you left it on for 5 days! I own KIKO and Barry M textured polishes, and I prefer ones with shimmer on too :)

    1. Oh, I hope your shop offers Red Velvet. There are three more that have a shimmer/flakes: Treat-Heart, Royal Icing, and Pink Sprinkles. :)

  7. I'm not a huge fan of textured cremes... they kind of look like popcorn ceiling to me lol. But I love texture with shimmers. That red one is sooo gorgeous! :D

  8. I don't own any of these and I'm not sure if I ever will. I've been liking textured polishes, but not the ones without shimmer. Great swatches though!

    1. I was really curious about the feel of the cremes. They look so plastic, you know? But I was surprised that they don't feel like it! I'm not creme lover though, and Red Velvet is much prettier. :)

  9. red velvet is so beautiful. i just saw this last night, too. i think i picked up cranberry from that collection. you're right i do not like it without shimmer. i have sour apple and am thinking of selling or giving it away since the texture is too cottage cheese for me.
